Working principle of brake camshaft
The brake camshaft is a component in a piston engine. Its function is to control the opening and closing of valves. Although the camshaft speed in a four stroke engine is half that of the crankshaft, its speed is usually still very high and it needs to withstand a large amount of torque. Therefore, the design requires high strength and support for the brake camshaft. Its material is usually special cast iron, and occasionally forged parts are used. Due to the fact that the valve motion law is related to the power and operating characteristics of an engine, the design of the brake camshaft plays a very important role in the engine design process.
The main body of the camshaft is a cylindrical rod with the same length as the cylinder bank, which is sheathed with several cams to drive the valves. One end of the camshaft is the bearing support point, and the other end is connected to the drive wheel. The side of the cam is egg shaped. The purpose of its design is to ensure sufficient intake and exhaust of the cylinder, specifically to complete the opening and closing of the valves in the shortest possible time. In addition, considering the durability and smoothness of the engine operation, the valve should not have too much or too much impact due to the acceleration and deceleration process during the opening and closing action, otherwise it will cause serious wear and noise of the valve, or other serious consequences. Therefore, there is a direct relationship between the cam and the power, torque output, and smoothness of operation of the engine.
Generally speaking, in an in-line engine, one brake camshaft corresponds to one valve, while in a V-type engine or a horizontally opposed engine, every two valves share one brake camshaft, while Wankel engine and valveless valve distribution engine do not need a brake camshaft due to their special structure.
